About True Story Newsletter

True Story Newsletter is an intermittent letter from me, Liz Massey, to anyone who:

  • Writes nonfiction

  • Wants to write nonfiction

  • Wonders how to make the writing they choose to do or are required to do in their everyday life better

  • Loves nonfiction writing and wants to learn more

  • Loves a nonfiction writer and wonders what goes on inside their head as they write

  • Loves fiction and wonders why anyone voluntarily bothers to read nonfiction

  • Thinks that good writing can and does change the world

I’ve spent much of my career as an editor, but this newsletter will focus on the writing life. As my tagline states, both the “inner process and the outer results” of writing are fascinating to me, and worthy of discussion.

About Me

My name is Liz Massey and I’ve been writing and editing nonfiction since 1983, when I sold my first humor column for $10 to a tabloid for teenagers. Since then, my writing career has taken me all sorts of places I have not necessarily expected, including:

  • Writing features and profiles for a retirement community newsletter

  • Drafting scripts for safety videos at an aluminum manufacturing plant

  • Writing an op-ed column for a local LGBTQ+ magazine for 15 years

  • Professional ghost-blogging for dentists, luxury leased home communities, and clean energy consultants

  • Writing web content for a university alumni association and for small law firms

  • Drafting resumes for friends, relatives and perfect strangers

If you want to learn more about my professional life, you can visit my LinkedIn profile, although truthfully it could use an update.
